Garment Sewing - 6 Week Workshop

Welcome to the world of garment making! This will be a longer format workshop (6 weekly 2 hour classes) meant to teach all the skills necessary to embark upon garment making. We will go over how to pick materials and sewing patterns, how to measure your body, common adjustments, and techniques used in garment sewing like buttonholes and topstitching. We will choose the pattern(s) to work on together in class to make sure everyone gets to make something that suits their style. Ages 13+ are welcome. We have class machines, but if you are more comfortable on your own machine, please feel free to bring it. Week 1 --Materials- sewing machine, notebook --Introductions, students share what personal goals they have so we can try and accommodate everyone. Asses skill levels. --Go over tools that they will need to make sure everyone is prepared for the next class. Zipper foot, seam gauge, marking tools, iron, tape measure, new machine needles in different sizes. --Pick patterns and then discuss fabric options-talk about fabric content, sewing supply stores etc. --Homework- order pattern and fabric Week 2 --Materials- sewing machine, notebook, tools, pattern. Wear a fitted tank top and leggings if possible for easier measuring. --Discuss sizing and measure our bodies, compare to pattern sizes and select sizes, discuss grading between sizes if necessary. --Assess the patterns for any particular skills needed, practice those skills. Zippers, buttonholes, etc. --Homework- make sure to pre-wash fabric for next class Week 3 --Materials- sewing machine, notebook, tools, pattern, fabric --We will double check sizing and cut out our patterns --Prep and cut out fabric as well, make all necessary markings, interface --If there’s time, start sewing! Week 4-6 --Materials- sewing machine, notebook, tools, pattern, fabric --Sewing! If anyone finishes their first project we can discuss planning for their next one.
