Mend & Make Private Lesson
Learn to Sew Patchwork Pants!
Service Description
Have that favorite pair of pants you just can't bear to ever let go? Let Caleigh Bird show you how to resize, restyle, and relove them forever! In this machine sewing lesson focused on upcycling, Caleigh will guide you through adding vintage-style patchwork inserts to your favorite jeans or corduroys—whether you’re dreaming of boho bell-bottoms or a full-length insert that brings the fit perfectly to size. You’ll also learn the art of hand patching, both for strengthening well-loved garments and/or adding thoughtful decorative details. Bring your own pair of non-stretch jean or corduroy pants to rework. Patchwork fabric will be provided, but if you have any you've been collecting, feel free to bring it, too. This one-on-one intensive is for folks who have basic knowledge of machine and hand sewing, and is especially perfect to take after the Private Sewing Lesson with Caleigh. Lessons with Caleigh need to be booked at least 10 days in advance. Caleigh Bird was lucky enough to be taught how to sew at a very young age by her mom on a passed-down 1968 Singer. At around age 6 she began learning to sew basic clothes for her Barbie dolls using hand stitches, then graduated to making simple dresses and bags, and soon totally fell in love with her first bellbottom patchwork inserts on vintage jeans. By the time she was in eighth grade, Caleigh was regularly making and altering her own clothes... and hasn't stopped since! Caleigh is awesome at patchwork and altering clothes - both decorative and utilitarian! She can teach you all her tricks for layering on patchwork so you never have to throw away your favorite pair of pants, and can also teach you how to make fun seam inserts for pants or shorts, either lengthwise strips or triangle bell bottoms (which is also a great way to customize a pair of pants to fit you like a glove!). Caleigh is also available for a very thorough Beginner's Lesson on the fundamentals of hand stitching and machine sewing by teaching you to use your own machine or one here at the shop. You’ll be able to do simple alterations and make basic items after one intensive lesson.
